Using the studio lights to direct shadows from a paper crane sculpture by the late Gisela Sommer, Flight, (Hold on Tight) began with recording the jagged flock of peace cranes onto canvas and then adding repeating washes of similar shapes. The overall composition is directly related to a detail in a recent painting titled *Signs of Spring. A central, abstract figure leaps diagonally over a watery landscape banked by flowers that also forms the shape of a tree. The leaping figure partially forms a stretching figure in blue looking over their shoulder down to the viewers’ bottom left hand corner. A fence leads the eye back to main figure on the bottom right who hugs themselves tightly.
You can view this piece at my opening at the Carnegie Gallery this Friday, July 8 from 7pm-9:30pm.
Painting and Collage July 8 – July 31, 2022
Artist Tina Newlove explores her place in the world in this exhibition of painting and collage. Her use of symbols, intense colour, repetition, and pattern create an expressive visual energy. She further juxtaposes recognizable and non-representational images in often ambiguously compressed environments suggesting the transient moments of daily life. The work in this exhibition focuses on feelings of control and isolation as a result of the shared pandemic.
