I Have Become Like a Bird Alone on a Roof. Oil on wood panel, 3 x 4″, 2021
Many, many years ago I read this phrase and it stuck in my mind. I did a number of paintings on this theme a long time ago but the images are on slides so I can’t show you. In those paintings, the bird was always much larger than the house.
I had to look it up online, the phrase is Psalm 102:7 from the bible ‘I lie awake; I have become like a bird alone on a roof.’
I’ve definitely had some sleepless nights this past year and I guess lately we’re all a little bit like this bird in the Ontario lockdown.
I think the bird is small in this painting because being inside the house has become much larger in mind and reality. Often these smaller works become larger paintings, I’ll let you know if that becomes the case.
I don’t put hanging hardware on these small works as they hang better and flush to the wall on a straight nail.
