What’s going on in the studio during this hot, dry Ontario summer?

I have had three artworks accepted into Juried Exhibitions in the area.

My Self Portrait, oil on canvas, 36 x 12” has been accepted into the Grimsby Public Art Gallery’s 2016 Biannual Juried Exhibition, which will run from August 6 – September 11.

I began this painting at the end of 2015 and finished early 2016. I’ve always painted self-portraits here and there, sometimes as studies, sometimes just to check in with myself.  Check out some images of past self-portraits in the following gallery.

And Protest Girl, collage, 35 x 17” has been accepted into the Guelph Civic Museums’ Wall of Art: Girl Power exhibition which runs from July 5 – October 2, with the Opening Reception on Friday, July 22 part of Guelph’s Fourth Fridays .

Protest Girl is part of a series I have been working on featuring everyday female heroes; thinking, struggling, surviving and conquering the day.  This artwork is made with woven paper, a charcoal drawing, trim from my Grandmother’s sewing box and a hand-stitched sewn paper flag punctuating the underlying traditional theme of ‘Women’s work’. Check out more artwork along this theme:

My piece Automatons, oil and stitching on dictionary page, 11 x 8”, 2016 has been accepted into the Helson Gallery’s Transformation: An Exhibition of Altered Books in Georgetown ON. The exhibition will run from September 14 – November 27, 2016.  A reception is planned for the afternoon of Sunday, September 18.

Keep an eye out for more information about my Upcoming Exhibition: A Little Truth in Everything at the Williams Mill Art Centre in Glen Williams for the month of November.  I will be doing a live performance painting to music with Andrew Hendriks at the gallery. In November as well I’m looking forward to painting live with singer/songwriter Gregory Hoskins for three dates at the Pearl Company in Hamilton ON.

My latest paintings and collage works explore, from a female perspective, the robotic motions and thought patterns humans fall into when they are going about their day making decisions about their environment, living arrangements, relationships and politics.  My themes relate to the intersections of work and family, tradition and technology, alienation in modern society and the necessity of withdrawing into nature.  The phrase #mechanizedbiologicalimpulses  continues to pop into my head as I consider the connections of nature and politics, city life and country life.

Studio visits always welcome by appointment.
