Performance Art – In addition to her studio practice, Tina regularly collaborates via live performance painting with bands and musicians since 1997. Upcoming live painting at the Liberty Grand, Toronto ON, October 2024, Gatehouse Fundraiser. Bookings available.
During live sets with bands, dj’s, singer/songwriters and spoken word poets Tina Newlove works to record and paint a direct expression of the sounds and music using layers of organic washes and heavy mark-making. Abstract figures and buildings are carefully constructed and then deconstructed as Newlove captures thoughts of man and machine, urban life and concepts of hope and freedom.
Tina Newlove was a founding member of Tribe of One, a multi-disciplinary Canadian Performance Collective focused on social justice and cultural exchange. Tribe of One travelled with UNICEF to KOSOVO in 1999 to perform a benefit concert and travelled extensively in the Northwest Territories to perform and conduct workshops in small communities and schools.
“The Birchview residency gave me the chance to explore new instruments and create new sounds in a quiet, friendly and inspiring setting outside of the pressures of my daily routines. The performance at the end of the week provided me with the unique opportunity to incorporate some of these sounds into compositions alongside Tina Newlove’s incredible painting. The audience was made up of guests of a diverse range of ages and backgrounds that may not have normally had the opportunity to hear my music and I received some very thoughtful and interesting questions about my sounds and process. Through the audience’s response and Tina Newlove’s visual interpretation I was able to experience my music in a new light. Overall, the residency was an amazing experience for me!”

Zhaoyi Cai and Marshall Drägun present ‘GLAUBEN’ – a living creation audio/visual performance at BirchView Cabin
Inspired by the sights, sounds, spirits, and living memories that are projected and carried through time; stemming from the lives of our Mothers, Grandmothers, and the environments of their past brought forth trans-generationally into the present moment to create informed experiential spectacle.
‘Glauben’ is the Germanic word meaning ‘believe’. This project is an attempt to lay color and tone to our awareness of the subtle, and often seemingly intangible connections and transmissions from our ancestors and how that may impact and direct creation and expression within the present moment.
2022 Collette Broeders & Ed Janzen, Residency and Live Performance with Projections
Alongside Tina’s studio in Campbellville ON is BirchView Cabin, a beautiful off-grid cabin and satellite location for the 2022 – 2024 summer seasons of the Stone & Sky Music & Art Series (Pelee Island) Artist Residencies.
BirchView Cabin is a 100-sq. foot off-grid cabin on the Newdriks micro farm hosted by visual artist Tina Newlove and musician Andrew Hendriks. Artists are invited to a self-directed residency/retreat where they are able to research, explore and further their practice in a quiet setting. There are 8 Conservation Halton Nature Parks within a 10 – 20 min drive from the cabin including a rare meromictic lake and longhouse village at Crawford Lake. A labyrinth walk has been cut into the front meadow to explore and is home to many birds. Ideal for woodsy, self-reliant types, we hope to provide a beautiful and comfortable stay for writing/retreat/research purposes and if a fireside performance is part of your stay we can accommodate sound, projection and invitations to artist groups and interested parties. There is a dedicated audience of three chickens and farm-dog Zoey.
Stay tuned for future self-directed Artist Residency opportunities at Birchview Cabin as we navigate on our own.
